What happens at a hearing test?
The full assessment will take about an hour and a half, and be carried out by our fully qualified Audiologist.
Our audiologist will need to understand the difficulties you are currently experiencing with your hearing, a little about your lifestyle and medical history. Finding out about you enables the audiologist to start tailoring an aid specifically for you, therefore:
- Details of any problems you may have with your ears will be discussed in detail.
- The Audiologist will then carry out more in-depth tests to understand your hearing difficulties.
- Your ears, canals and drums will be examined for general health and wellbeing, infection and ear wax and the results will be explained to you.
- Your hearing will be measured electronically using an audiometer and headphones. You will be asked whether you hear different sounds at different levels responding using a ?push button? patient response handheld unit. A precise audiogram of your hearing will be recorded.
- Our Audiologist will explain the audiogram and should you benefit from a hearing device, he/she will advise you accordingly of the next step and give you their recommendations for your hearing loss.
- The Audiologist will fit various aids to you, giving you the opportunity to trial and understand the difference that hearing aids can make to your hearing.
- We welcome a friend or relative, who understands your hearing difficulties, to be in attendance if you so wish. It is always nice to have a familiar voice with you when trialing the aids. They will be made very welcome.

Prevention of hearing loss
Can you prevent hearing loss?
It is impossible to block out all the noise of our busy world. Whether it is construction, car traffic or loud music at a concert, modern life has a way of making a racket.
But you can control some of your noise exposure. For example, it is a good idea to take earplugs along to concerts and movies that feature a loud soundtrack. It is a great idea to wear earplugs while using noisy household machines such as leaf blowers. People who work in noisy environments should ask their employers to provide hearing protection.

Treatment of hearing loss
Hearing loss can have many causes and be either gradual or sudden. Certain types of hearing loss can be medically treated, but other types cannot. A person with hearing loss can, ‘however,’ be helped with technology.

Ear wax Removal
Ear wax production is a natural process and acts as a barrier to protect the ear. Some of us, however, experience over production of ear wax which can cause discomfort, dizziness and hearing loss.
Modern methods of Earwax Removal are far easier and much more comfortable than previous methods They are also safer and far more comfortable.
Removal of earwax by micro suction is the preferred method chosen by our Audiology Team. It is performed using a microscope, which allows us to see what we are doing inside your ears and a medical suction device that removes the wax like a small vacuum.
It is recognised as one of the most popular, comfortable and safe procedures for earwax removal and the procedure is suitable for everyone. Dependent upon whether the wax is soft or hardened (impacted) a treatment of ear wax softening may be prescribed.
What happens during the microsuction appointment?
Firstly our audiologist will ask you about your hearing health to form a case history and to make sure the procedure is the correct method for you.
The Audiologist will examine your ear canals and ear drums by means of an otoscope to view the extend of ear wax build up.
Microsuction removal is a short and safe process involving a small medical suction device being placed precisely in the ear canal which acts as a small vacuum to remove excess ear wax.
A further otoscopic examination follows to ensure all ear wax has been removed and that your ears are clear of wax.
